With the recent promise of a vaccine bringing the hope of a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, hospitality businesses can now start to rebuild and plan for the future. There are many gains to be made for hospitality businesses who use this chance to adapt their business model and get ahead of the curve.   • Appoint a Green Manager at your business, someone in the right position that can implement changes in all departments.

  • Allow your Green Manager to spend 1 day a week working on developing your Green strategy. There are a huge number of environmentally friendly business ideas to explore and your team will need sufficient time in the first phase of development.

  • Appoint a Green Team. Divide your team into Waste, Water, and Energy, and ensure someone from every department is involved.

  • Engage your employees, organise monthly meetings, listen to their ideas, reward the most successful ideas after implementation.

  • Create your business environmental baselines. Kwh of energy used per person, M3 water used per person, Kg waste per person. Benchmark your results on a monthly and annual basis.

  • Abolish all single use items at your business, no matter what material they are made of, single use is a thing of the past, and there are lots of great alternatives in the market.

  • Review your lighting and equipment, does this machine need to be on to make money right now? If the answer is no, turn it off!

  • Watch your bins, what are your most disposed items? Can you abolish them from your operations? Removing single use-products and focusing on waste reduction will help you to promote yourself as eco-friendly accommodation.

  • Calculate the water flow rate of your taps, showers and cisterns. If they use more water than the good practice standards, reduce their flow. Water conservation is an important part of the process to make your hotel eco-friendly, and currently a huge missed opportunity for businesses to reduce their utility costs without any noticeable effect on their service.
