10 Quick Tips To Make Your Hospitality Business Environmentally Friendly

With the recent promise of a vaccine bringing the hope of a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, hospitality businesses can now start to rebuild and plan for the future. The question of how life will be different post-covid is never far from our thoughts. Here at Fifty Shades Greener we see this as a great opportunity to build back not only stronger, but Greener.

Running an environmentally friendly business is more important now than ever before, and the opportunity we have to do so is greater than now ever before. There are many gains to be made for hospitality businesses who use this chance to adapt their business model and get ahead of the curve. We see our clients consistently making both economic and social gains, as well as reducing their overall carbon footprint, by implementing environmentally friendly initiatives.

The key barrier to change is knowledge and skills, but change is actually easier than most people think. Once employees are able to view an environmental programme not as an extra task to perform in their day, but as a consistent change of mind-set across all departments of your business and your team, things start to click. We teach a multi-platform approach with a step by step approach that doesn’t create extra work, but rather a new way of running your business.

Many business owners still don’t understand the concept of running a Greener business. The general perception out there is that it is going to cost more money. We completely disagree! Running a Greener business means reducing your Carbon Footprint, which starts by reducing the three pillars of sustainability - your use of energy and water, and your production of waste. This will in turn reduce your business utility costs, saving you money.

So what can you do before this year ends, to start running an environmentally friendly business?

A green journey is not an overnight turnaround, it is rather a journey of continued improvement. So take your time, go at your own pace, but make sure you keep working every week towards your Green goals.

Here are 10 quick tips for you to get started:

  • Define your business Green Goals. What do you want to achieve and when do you want to achieve those goals by - 6 months, a year or even a 3 year plan? Set short term achievable goals that build to a longer and lager target.

  • Appoint a Green Manager at your business, someone in the right position that can implement changes in all departments.

  • Allow your Green Manager to spend 1 day a week working on developing your Green strategy. There are a huge number of environmentally friendly business ideas to explore and your team will need sufficient time in the first phase of development.

  • Appoint a Green Team. Divide your team into Waste, Water, and Energy, and ensure someone from every department is involved.

  • Engage your employees, organise monthly meetings, listen to their ideas, reward the most successful ideas after implementation.

  • Create your business environmental baselines. Kwh of energy used per person, M3 water used per person, Kg waste per person. Benchmark your results on a monthly and annual basis.

  • Abolish all single use items at your business, no matter what material they are made of, single use is a thing of the past, and there are lots of great alternatives in the market.

  • Review your lighting and equipment, does this machine need to be on to make money right now? If the answer is no, turn it off!

  • Watch your bins, what are your most disposed items? Can you abolish them from your operations? Removing single use-products and focusing on waste reduction will help you to promote yourself as eco-friendly accommodation.

  • Calculate the water flow rate of your taps, showers and cisterns. If they use more water than the good practice standards, reduce their flow. Water conservation is an important part of the process to make your hotel eco-friendly, and currently a huge missed opportunity for businesses to reduce their utility costs without any noticeable effect on their service.

Greening your Hospitality business is easier than you think, it will save you money, and it will align your business to your customer values. It’s easy to make a start - with even the smallest of changes making a huge impact.
